Modifying and Versioning Documents
Editing a document in chat now saves every AI-made change automatically as a new version, without overwriting or renaming anything by hand. When an edit is applied to a document already stored in connected storage (e.g. OneDrive), the platform saves it back in place and relies on that provider's native version history to preserve the prior version.
If an edit spans multiple open documents, each one is versioned independently. A one-click revert lets users go back to the previous version, for a single document or for an entire multi-document edit set, without deleting anything in the process. Documents can also be edited by name, even if they aren't currently open in the preview pane.
Note: Currently, users can upload up to five documents, with a maximum of 200 pages and 20 MB per documents
Benefits
Removes the manual save and rename after every AI edit, so users can keep working instead of managing file versions themselves.
Make it safe to try an edit, since nothing is silenty overwritten and every AI change can undone in one click.
Extends version safety to multi-document work, so editing several documents together doesn't require tracking each one's history separately.
Let users edit a document by name alone, so they don't need to have it open or drag it in first to make a quick change.
Keeps users informed when a saves fails, so an edit is never silently lost and doesn't need to be redone from scratch.
What it does for the user:
When an AI edit is applied, the preview pane updates immedaitely with no reload or new tab, and a version indicator appears near the pane.
When multiple documents are open and edited, each shows it owns version indicator, and deach is saved as an independent new version.
When a document is saved back to connected storage, the platform overwrites the files in place and leans on that provider's version history to keep the previous version accesible (for example: "update and saved to Smith_MSA.docx. Your previous version is still there in version history if you need it.").
When the user clicks revert, the selected earlier version becomes the current working document in the preview pane, and the revert itself is lgoged as a new version rather than deleting any history.
When a revert covers a multi-document edit, the user can choose to revert the whole set or a single document, and the interface shows which documents are included.
When a user asks to edit a document by referencing a document using the "@", the assistant opens it, applies the edit, and saves it using the same versioning behaviour as any other edit.
When a save fails (permissions, connectivity, naming collision), the user is told which document failed and why, the in-progress edit stays in the conversation, and the save can be retried without doing the edit.
How to Modify and Version a Document: Benefits
With a document open in the preview pane, type an edit request in chat (e.g. "Update the termination clause to 60 days").
2. Review the updated document as it appears automatically in the preview pane.
3. If multiple documents are open, confirm which one the edit applies to, or continue editing another open document as needed.
4. To edit a document that isn't open, reference it by name in chat. If more than one document matches, select the correct one from the candidates the assistant lists (folder/matter, storage provider, last modified date).
5. To undo a change, click the revert button.
6. To save the document to your storage, click the save button.
